BACKGROUND

  • Once upon a time, the Howells were a happy, close-knit family. She doesn't like to admit how often she still thinks about that.
  • Grew up in a stable family, basically attached at the hip to her twin brother, Isaac, and with their parents encouraging them to try things they were interested in. Both twins were absolute goddamn nerds, probably too smart for their own good, and inclined to make friends fairly easily, even if they'd always put each other first.
  • Late high school became nerve-wracking with the sudden possibility of being separated for the first time in their lives. Luckily there were overlaps in their acceptances, and they picked a school together, figuring that even if they'd no longer be in rooms next to each other, they'd at least be close by.
  • So much of the first year of college was great -- branching out, learning new things, and starting to become slightly more used to not being at her brother's side 24/7. And then in May, Isaac went out one night and was hit by a car. Or at least that's the story she got.
  • She was brought in to verify the body, and something about it was wrong, but she wasn't ever able to explain to anyone how. Nobody really believed her, and their parents were convinced it was just the grief, trying to help her let go.
  • She came back for the next year. Imogene kept wondering why she felt so sure her brother wasn't dead, just gone, but she couldn't do anything about it. In winter, the best friend she'd made almost as soon as she arrived got sick. By that spring, she'd lost the next closest person to her.
  • She went on. She made friends, even if it was mostly bonding through grief. She met a professor deeply entrenched in supernatural ongoings and ended up learning about her own psychic powers. She survived, because she knew her brother would want that.
  • When she graduated, she only applied to med schools far away, desperate for a fresh start. Instead when she got there, she met a bunch of people who actually managed to help her figure out what had really happened.
  • It took a while. But seven years after he disappeared through a crack into the wrong plane, Imogene came back for the summer armed with information, and she finally, finally managed to bring her brother back. Lost and hurting, but alive.
  • Everything is different now. Imogene's an adult, but her brother is still technically the 19-year-old he was when he disappeared. Isaac's forgotten most of his life before disappearing, forgotten how to exist among the living. She's still angry at her parents for trying to convince her to let him go. She's still angry at herself for ever trying, and for missing the way he used to be. She's closed herself off, afraid to meet more people that she's convinced deep down she'll just lose.
  • She bounces between school and where her brother lives with the professor these days as much as her schedule can handle it, trying to help him cope, trying to finish her schooling, and pretending her grief disappeared when her brother came back.
ABILITIES
PSYCHIC ABILITIES
Precognitive. Her primary power, and the strongest one. Imogene doesn't see visions or learn things so much as she just has the information sort of... slot into her mind, so she doesn't always recognize what it is she's learned from her abilities. She has little to no control over what she gets, but is slowly getting better at recognizing what those things are.
Clairvoyance. Similarly to her precog abilities, sometimes present-day information will come to her instead; similarly to those abilities, they file in as something she knows, making it even harder to tell the difference.
Empathy. Very mild, but she'll pick up on strong emotions from people around her -- not quite feeling them herself but physically aware of them, almost like a synesthetic sensation on her skin. She's not really aware of this, tends to chalk it up to either general observation or something hitting her via clairvoyance.
